Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session  students will be able to:

Articulate the caries process and risk factors and to understand the concept and principles of minimally invasive dentistry

• Appreciate the requirement of routine use of rubber dam, the restorative materials available, their relative merits

• Understand the current concepts in adhesion to enamel and dentine and to be able to use aesthetic composite materials on anterior teeth

• Discuss the biological approach to caries treatment and to appreciate the need to conserve tooth tissue

• Articulate the potential preventative, minimally invasive and restorative approaches available in the treatment of caries

• Understand the fundamental importance of rubber dam usage in restorative dentistry, application and techniques

• Understand enamel bonding and dentine bonding (different generations of dentine bonding agents)

• Discuss micro leakage and its importance in Dentistry

• Understand the material constituents and properties of Composites, Compomers and Glass Ionomers and clinical indications

• Understand the c- factor and relevance to clinical practice

• Understand the concept of composite layering

• Understand the concept of the interface between prepared tooth tissue and current restorative materials

• Discuss the facts and fallacies surrounding bonded amalgam restorations.

• Discuss potential methods of retaining amalgam restorations

• Understand the damaging effect of dentine pins

• Debate mercury usage in dentistry

• Demonstrate the use of aesthetic composite materials

• Demonstrate layering techniques to achieve optimal aesthetics

• Demonstrate techniques to finish and polish and be confident to apply to apply techniques in practice
