Detailed Description

This 10-day expedition will give students the opportunity to visit, exchange ideas, and learn from organic coffee and family farmers in Guatemala. Much of our time will be spent in the Maya-Achí territory of Baja Verapaz, learning about agroecology and social movements with community organizations and Indigenous farmers. The course will begin with several classroom lessons in Plymouth (or online) to discuss in-country details, concepts around agroecology and Indigenous agriculture, and a chance to meet one another. In Guatemala, we will visit agricultural cooperatives and organizations to learn about their projects and spend time with their members. Students will observe agroecology in action and learn how farmers are building resilience and food security through agroecological practices and community development. Participation in farm projects will also be integrated into daily activities, as well as learning about specific practices, crops, and foods. Students of all backgrounds will benefit from this course, including social sciences and development, ecology and sustainability, geography and food studies.
