Information

We travel by coach to Wapping Pier for a tour of the Met police river unit, including the rope rescue teams, floating mortuary, museum, dive team and historic police station tour.

Then we stay at Wombats Hostel in the City of London for the night and have breakfast the following morning. It has a subterranean bar and puts on comedy nights and music most evenings.

On day 2 we have a walking tour of the City with input from former police experts on the history of policing London, the Jack the Ripper murders (we’ll visit the body deposition sites), see how community cohesion and immigration have impacted the area over centuries, conduct a foot surveillance exercise with former undercover officers through the streets of the City, and look at the crime patterns in the Victorian era by visiting an old Victorian work house.  There is the opportunity for amazing street food for lunch in Spittlefields market and many ither delights!

Please make every effort to come along as this opportunity is simply not available to the general public. You should rearrange any work commitments or other events you may have planned for these dates.

There is a nominal cost to you as students to secure a place of £10 per person.

Can you please make your payment using this page before the 19th April 2026.

The University picks up the rest of the costs including your travel, accommodation and breakfast on the second day as well as the cost of the events you will undertake. The only other cost to students will be your other meals and drinks for the two-day fieldtrip.

To keep the costs within reasonable limits only one night of overnight accommodation in London has been adopted which means that there is a lot to experience over two days but it will be worth it!
